Why is Humpty Dumpty an Egg?

I was surfing the net and came across this interesting question..."Where in the nursery rhyme does it say that Humpty Dumpty is an Egg?"

 Original Picture

I found this interesting because I heard this rhyme a million times and never thought of why Humpty Dumpty is an Egg.

Answer: It doesn't say that anywhere. The song is originally meant to be a riddle, to which the answer is an egg.

In a 1902 Mother Goose story book by William Wallace Denslow

The original song:
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall;
Threescore men and threescore more,
Cannot place Humpty dumpty as he was before

Most common version:
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again
